The St. Andrew’s & Caledonian Society of Vancouver was founded on September 13, 1886 — the very same year the city of Vancouver was incorporated.
In those early days, the city was little more than a rough settlement rebuilding after the Great Fire. But even then, a group of Scottish pioneers came together with a clear goal: to build community, celebrate their heritage, and create something lasting.
Led by Malcolm A. MacLean, Vancouver’s first mayor, the Society quickly became one of the city’s earliest and most influential cultural organizations.
On November 30, 1887, the Society held its first St. Andrew’s Ball — a tradition that would go on to become the longest-running annual social event in Vancouver.
The setting was humble by today’s standards: one of the only buildings on Hastings Street, surrounded by forest and early development. But the spirit of the evening was anything but small.
Guests gathered for supper upstairs, dancing below, and an evening filled with music, laughter, and celebration. Even at the time, it was described as a “grand ball” — and a highlight of the young city’s social calendar.
Year after year, the St. Andrew’s Ball grew in scale and reputation.
By the early 1900s, it was already known as:
“the oldest annual social function in the city’s history… held without a break since 1887.”
From opera houses to grand hotel ballrooms, generations of Vancouverites came together to celebrate with:
Live music and traditional songs
Ceilidh dancing and performances
Toasts, laughter, and a strong sense of community
One early account noted that no one attending could “fail to enjoy themselves to the utmost.” And honestly… not much has changed.
For well over a century, the Society and the city of Vancouver have grown side by side.
Today, we continue that tradition — not by standing still, but by evolving:
Welcoming new generations into the community
Making events accessible, social, and fun
Keeping Scottish culture alive in a way that feels relevant today
The setting may look a little different now, but the heart of it all remains the same:
A good gathering, a lively dance, and a community that feels like home.
The St. Andrew’s & Caledonian Society of Vancouver is a community built on connection, culture, and a shared love of bringing people together.
We’re a mix of longtime members, newcomers, and first-timers — some with deep Scottish roots, others just curious to try something new. What we all have in common is a love of good company, lively events, and the kind of atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.
